Message from the Exalted Ruler It feels good to be through September. September is that transition month between those lazy days of summer and those busy days of fall. And we certainly need to be busy in our Lodge to make it successful. There are so many things to be busy with: converting our paper bulletin to an e-Bulletin; getting ready for the Lodge visit by the DVP; making sure our quota of Big Bucks Calendars gets sold; recruiting new people to become officers for next year; getting ready for the Elks Memorial Day in December; getting ready for the State Convention in October; the list goes on and on. But let’s not let busy work keep us from enjoying some relaxation at the Club. We have new people working hard to make the Club more relaxing and enjoyable. What better way is there to recharge your spirits than by meeting a group of your friends at the Club for a drink, a meal, and plenty of stimulating conversation? Plan on stopping by more often. Not only will you be enjoying some of the privileges of being an Elk, but you will also be helping the Club prosper. We cannot prosper without your participation. October will be a good month. We are now in full swing with our planning and array of activities. Help make October a better month by participating more in the life of the Lodge. Stop by at the Club more often, participate in more activities at the Club. Bring your non-Elk friends with you for a visit. Who knows, they may want to join and be an active participant in the greatest fraternal organization in America. Let me know if there is anything I can do to make your participation more enjoyable and rewarding. Feel free to contact me by email: DJohnCole@aol.com, or by phone: 989.284.5266. Fraternally, Michigan State Association 2009 Big Bucks Calendars are On Sale at the Club! Every year, the State Elks Association asks each Lodge in Michigan to help raise money for the many fine projects of the State Association. One of the ways they do this is through the Big Bucks Calendar Program. Each Lodge is provided with a quota of Big Bucks Calendars to sell at $20 apiece. Our Lodge has been given a quota of 70 calendars. Our Lodge’s sales force has started aggressively selling these calendars, but we also need your help in meeting our quota. The next time you are at the Club, please ask for one or more of the Big Bucks Calendars. This is your chance to support a “Win-Win” cause for as little as $20 per calendar. The State Association gets part of the purchase price of each calendar and we get to keep part of the purchase price of each calendar. Proceeds go to support our Youth, Special Needs Children, Seniors, Veterans, and Troops. If the Lodge doesn’t sell all of the calendars, it must still pay for all 70 of them. PLEASE HELP OUT. Here’s how it works: Each ELKS BIG BUCKS CALENDAR comes with a 4 digit number that is issued to you and you alone. The Michigan State Lottery draws a four-digit number daily, (EVENING DRAWING). If your number matches the one drawn that day (STRAIGHT ONLY), YOU ARE A WINNER! Each number drawn Monday through Friday will be a $50 winner. Each number drawn Saturday will be a $300 winner. These make excellent Christmas gifts, especially if you like giving lottery tickets as Christmas gifts. No where else can you get a daily lottery ticket for an entire year for only $20 and still support everything the Elks stand for: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity. Saturday, October 11: Pulled Pork Cook-Out & NASCAR Party – We will be hosting our NASCAR party with a blast. Francine, that friendly face you see behind the bar, would like to take the time to invite all of our NASCAR fans to come out and enjoy the race, and take the time to meet some of our new members. Happy hour will be from October 16-18: The 2008 Fall Convention of the Michigan Elks Association will be held at the Kewadin Casino & Resort in Sault Ste Marie. Tuesday, October 21: Lodge Visitation by Jack McDaniel, DVP. Sunday, December 7: Elks Memorial Day. The first Sunday in December of each year is a day commemorated to the memories of departed members. Saturday, December 20: Christmas Basket delivery day. We have placed some lucky member’s membership number in one of the articles in the Bulletin. To win:
The donations for Christmas Baskets have started to come in. Many thanks to those of you have been among the first to donate. Your gifts are greatly appreciated. The Christmas Basket program has been one of our more successful and visible charitable works. Please consider making your donation early this year. Our baskets cost around $65 but any donation is greatly appreciated. The baskets will be delivered on Saturday, December 20. Last year we delivered over 420 boxes and grocery sacks of food to 106 families in Midland County. Our goal is to exceed last year so please get your contribution in early. If you have any questions you can contact our Christmas Basket Chairman, Bob Woods, by leaving a message at the Elks (989-835-2271) or at his home (989-835-1064). On Sunday, September 28, we had all of the carpets cleaned in the building; we have been working hard to give the Club a new face lift. There are several things in the building that I would like to see improved. But as we all know we don’t have staff to make rapid changes. 02269 I am looking for volunteers to help around the building. If anyone is interested, contact Francine Henson at 989.486.1365. Gary Reisig, Trustee Chair, has been appointed to chair a committee to review our dues. We have been notified that the National dues will increase by $3 for next year. The committee will examine various components of our local dues, including Life Member dues. The committee will be making its recommendation by January 1. In January, we will be sending out our dues renewal notices for Elk Year 2009/2010. Serving on the committee with Gary are George Janson, Trustee, Greg Saxton, Lodge Secretary, and Pat Wilkins, Loyal Knight. District Vice President to Make Annual Visit On October 21, Jack McDaniel, DVP of the East Central District, will make his annual visitation to our Lodge. Accompanying him will be District Vice Chairman, John Dufelmeier, PER from Flint #222 and Jack Schnepp, PER from Alma #1400. They are planning on arriving about 5:00 P.M. to speak with the Exalted Ruler, Lodge Secretary, and the Chairman of our Accident Prevention committee. They will also be observing the opening and closing of the lodge and our rendition of the initiation ritual. Midland Elks Lodge 1610 |
